Revo Ambassadors Afrodite Kyranak and Anneloes van Veenare are competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics in 470 class sailing on August 12th. The two have sailed together for about four years, and have raced in competitions all over the world, from Miami, Florida to Mallorca, Spain.
Although Kyranak and van Veen are now teammates, they haven’t always sailed together. In fact, they used to compete against each other. Kyranak and van Veen began racing in 2004 in the Optimist class. “Optimist” refers to the one-person dinghy they sailed. A small sailboat, it’s intended for children up to the age of 15 and introduces children to the sport of sailing. They then graduated onto 470 class sailing—a dinghy sailed by two people—and competed against each other for the Youth 470 World and European medals. It wasn’t until 2012 that Kyranak and van Veen decided to team up; the rest is history! They’ve won numerous medals, including 6th place at the World Cup Miami, 5th place at the European Championship, and 5th place at the World Championship. Next up? Rio.
Kyranak and van Veen call themselves “A Team”, and they’re eager to show the world what they can do. We wish them the best of luck, and can’t to see them cruising out on the water!
